Brian Gifford, Ph.D.
Senior Research Associate
Brian Gifford is Senior Research Associate of the Integrated Benefits Institute. Dr. Gifford joined IBI in September, 2008 and is responsible for a variety of research and measurement programs focused on health and productivity improvement and the costs and durations of disability absences.
Dr. Gifford comes to IBI from the RAND Corporation, where his research focused primarily on workforce recruitment, training, performance, and retention. Prior to his appointment at RAND, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Scholars in Health Policy Research Program at the University of California, Berkeley. During that time, he studied the indirect and unanticipated impacts of military personnel policies on local health care safety nets.
Dr. Gifford received his Bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from New York University. As an undergraduate, he earned Phi Beta Kappa honors, while his dissertation on institutional determinants of public social welfare spending received the American Sociological Association’ annual Dissertation Award for 2004. He has additional expertise in the sociology of organizations.
