IBI’s medical guidelines research determines that unnecessary medical treatment for non-occupational, lowest-severity, low-back pain, alone cost the six employers in the study $18.8 million dollars during a one-year study period. Undertaken in partnership with healthcare information company Medstat, the study determined the full costs of medical treatment, disability and lost productivity from absence for five costly medical conditions common in the workforce. IBI determines a variety of purposes for evidence-based guidelines including treatment as well as the monitoring of chronic illness and disease. Full-cost results of compliance varies depending on the guidelines’ goals.
