The Integrated Benefits Institute, in partnership with American Benefits Consulting, has released new research on how large U.S. employers manage benefit continuation during employee leave. Based on responses from 304 senior HR and benefits leaders at companies with 2,500+ employees, this comprehensive study reveals critical insights into Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, and unpaid personal leave policies.

Key Findings:

•  56% of employers struggle to track premium payments during leave, with many relying on outdated manual processes.
•  Only 70% have written policies for all leave types—leaving room for confusion and compliance risk.
•  Nearly 1 in 3 employers (30%) adjust premium structures during Short-Term Disability (STD), and another 30% defer collection until after return—practices that can complicate payroll and employee experience.
•  47% differentiate benefits continuation based on tenure, employment status, or whether a disability is work-related—creating equity and compliance challenges.
•  Large employers (50,000+) provide significantly more generous continuation than mid-sized companies.

This data-driven report provides rare industry benchmarks and identifies where employers can strengthen their leave policies to improve employee retention, equity, and compliance.
