Infographic: The Working Caregiver

resource-image

This research examines the intersection of caregiving responsibilities and workforce participation using nationally representative data from Johns Hopkins University's National Study of Caregiving and real-world evidence from a leading caregiving support platform. The study quantifies work productivity loss, identifies contributors, and establishes the business case for employer-sponsored caregiver support interventions.

Highlights from IBI's study:

  • One in five employees is a caregiver
  • Caregiver strain includes emotional difficulty, physical burden, and financial constraints, each requiring different support strategies
  • Strain dramatically escalates productivity loss risk: low strain caregivers face four times higher odds, moderate strain 10 times higher, and high strain 40 times higher compared to those without strain
  • Preventing progression from low to moderate strain provides the greatest opportunity for protecting workplace productivity
  • Organizations can maximize impact through tiered support: basic resources for all caregivers, intensive services for daily care needs, and case management for high-risk individuals
